At the backdrop of the pending and on going atrocities in Gaza, Israel decides to attack the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria on April 1 killing 16 people including Iranian officials.
The Israeli attack marks an unprecedented escalation by Israel against Iran whom they claimed to be backing Hamas, Hezbollah and Yemen in the ongoing arm conflict in Palestine.
The killing of Iran’s army general, Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, among other Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commanders, is the clearest signal yet of Israel’s determination to shift the conflict’s rules of engagement – moving beyond simply preventing arms supplies to its enemies in the region or pushing Iranian-backed groups away from its border, to directly eliminating and defusing Irans support for its enemies.
In retaliation, Iran attacked Tel Aviv on Sunday, April 14 launching hundreds of drone missiles at Tel Aviv. Although the full impact of the attack is not yet known, Iran’s capabilities to carry out such attacks are clear.
Nevertheless, Israel claims that its Iron Dome defense system neutralized 99% of the missiles fired, resulting in minimal damage to its targeted facilities. However, these claims have not been independently verified.
President Biden has acknowledged the danger of the situation and has warned Israel against retaliatory strikes that could escalate the already complex conflict in the region. The United States has also made it clear to Israel that it would not support any further escalation of the conflict.
Israel’s recent actions in Gaza and Syria have been widely criticized for demonstrating a lack of morality and disregard for humanitarian and international law. Many observers believe that the demand for a ceasefire is now secondary to the need for justice and accountability for the atrocities committed by them. Lately, there are numerous calls for those responsible, including Netanyhu to be brought before the International Court of Justice.
Critics argue that Israel has confirmed itself to being a genocidal regime run by an ethno-supremacist-led government, despite its claim to be a democracy.
Its actions in Gaza and the West Bank over the past six months and recent attacks on Iranian in Syria serve as testimony of its barbaric actions and utter disregard for humanitarian and international law.
Iran has threatened to retaliate more severely if Tel Aviv responds to the attack. This situation highlights the ongoing escalating tensions in the region and the potential for further conflict which will ultimately affect the world economy as a whole.
The UN Security Council, meanwhile is holding an emergency meeting to deliberate on the issue and the Iranian ambassador and Permanent Representative, Mr. Amir Saeid Iravani clearly indicated Iran’s stance in protecting their interest and security ending his speech warning that if the United States gets involved, “Iran will act accordingly”
